Anglers targeting grouper in St. Petersburg, Florida are finding solid action offshore this week. With warming water temperatures in the mid-70s, red grouper and gag grouper have become more active along ledges, rock piles, and reef structures 20 to 50 miles out from the coast. Most successful catches are coming from depths between 80 to 150 feet.

Live pinfish, threadfin herring, and squid have been the top baits, with many anglers also finding luck on jigs and slow-pitch setups. Grouper are striking aggressively in the early morning and late afternoon, making these prime windows for booking charters or planning trips.

Heavy-duty bottom rigs with fluorocarbon leaders are recommended to prevent breakoffs on rocky terrain. A typical charter can catch between 10 - 15 different species. The most common fish on the 4 - 6 hour trips include the following: grey snapper (grunts) porgies, trigger fish, sand perch, lane snapper, small red, gag and scamp grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, puffers and many other species. The trophies include Goliath Grouper, King Mackerel, Bonita, Great Barracuda and a variety of sharks ranging from 6- 8 feet! Heading further offshore (10-12 hours trips) enables you to catch a greater variety of fish including, mangrove snapper, blackfin tuna, red grouper, amberjacks and red snapper along with other reef snapper. The charter (can) include snorkeling equipment for all guests if you plan on doing a little shelling and island hopping after a couple of hours of fishing. We will head to Egmont Key or Shell Island. Did you want to have a fish drag you around the boat? Do you want to see your teenage boys get humbled real quick? This is the trip for you!! On this trip it's all about the big ones! Our main targets will be goliath grouper and 6-8 foot sharks (the main sharks are sandbar, blacktip, spinner, lemon, nurse and sometimes tiger and hammerheads) it is also be possible for king mackerel, bonito, cobia and the very occasional sailfish and blackfin tuna! Great for bachelor parties and even families who have some fishing experience. Typical seasons are March through August but can be all year.

Extended Half Day Shark And Grouper Fishing Trip In St. Petersburg, FL 

This is a full day, 10 - 12 hours (It is listed for 10 hours, but depending on the bite and weather, I have no problem with 12 hours at no additional charge), 40 to 50 miles offshore for red grouper and red snapper (seasonal). On these trips, you never know what we may catch! We have caught king fish, sailfish, blackfin tuna, amber jacks, mangrove snapper, vermillion, and lanes. While I do not have an age limit, it is recommended that these anglers have been offshore before and have some experience bottom fishing. I love these trips!!
